Groundwork and composition [edit]

When Gaga was getting gear up to film the concluding scene of A Star Is Born, where she sings "I'll Never Love Once again", the singer got a telephone call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her terminal moments of Stage IV cancer. Gaga left the set and drove to meet Durham, but she arrived 10 minutes afterward her friend died. She asked Durham's husband if she should return to filming; he replied, "You've gotta do what Sonja would want you lot to do", so she returned to the fix. Co-star and manager Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga'due south loss simply Gaga was adamant about finishing the scene, and so she stepped on the gear up and sang "I'll Never Dear Again". The singer said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that 24-hour interval and I took it with me to [the] set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same day within an hour."[i]

Along with the picture show version, the soundtrack besides contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[two] [iii] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[4] The song is performed in the key of G major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per minute in common time. It follows a chord progression of Grandadd2–Emvii–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Gadd2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/E–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga's vocals span from G3 to E5.[5] Brian Truitt of USA Today described the vocal equally a "weepy" ballad.[six]

Release and operation [edit]

The song was first chosen as the tertiary single from the soundtrack on May 27, 2022 in France, where it was serviced to contemporary hit radio stations.[7] After soundtrack release, the song debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 nautical chart in the United States[8] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the country, while accumulating 66 million streams.[ix] Additionally, the song has reached the acme 10 position in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the top x of digital charts in Hellenic republic, Spain and Grand duchy of luxembourg, reaching the nautical chart summit in Slovakia.

Critical reception [edit]

The song received universal acclaim. In her review of the film, Melina Newman of Billboard called the ballad "stunning".[10] The magazine'southward Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga's performance of "I'll Never Love Again" as the motion-picture show's best scene and wrote, "Not only are the lyrics devastatingly beautiful, but Gaga/Marry showcases her full, skyscraper-loftier range."[11] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the song to Harry Nilsson's "Without Yous" and Eric Carmen's "All by Myself", and complimented Gaga's "one-time-schoolhouse finesse, timing, emotionality and lung power".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice called the song a "stunning, heart-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Dear Once more' is plenty effective on its own, the dialogue-included version of the song dramatically cuts out in its final seconds the same way the film does: jumping back in fourth dimension from Gaga's time-stopping operation to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that only enhances the song's emotional quotient".[xiii]

In his motion-picture show review, Ty Burr of The Boston World said Gaga'south "climactic memorial" performance of the vocal "will go out you a soggy mess whether you lot like it or non".[xiv] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the vocal would earn Gaga an Academy Awards nomination for Best Original Song.[15] United states Today 's Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Dearest Again,' the motion picture's devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her own Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about love and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. It's a transcendent accomplishment that could single-handedly net the singer-turned-actress her commencement Oscar, reminding us yet again that she'southward one of the all-time vocalists right at present in whatever genre, popular or otherwise."[16]
